The Overlook Hotel's Gold Room from The Shining

Our podcast episode all on the Gold Room from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, drops in May. Before that, here is our quick review.

Tucked away in the Overlook Hotel, with its endless hallways and eerie silence, the kitchen is a feast waiting to happen. It's stocked with enough roasts, poultry, and meats to feed a crowd that never comes. Amidst this abundance, though, it's the simple wish for chocolate ice cream that really hits home, a small reminder of normalcy and comfort in a place that's anything but normal.

Now, for those looking for something stronger than ice cream, the hotel’s bar, The Gold Room, is where the action is. Decked out in luxury yet somehow still feeling lonely, it's manned by a bartender who's a bit of a mystery himself. Dressed like he's stepped out of another era, he's the king of concocting drinks that'll loosen tongues and maybe even mess with your head a bit.

The Gold Room, with all its glamour, might look like the best spot for a night out, but there's a catch. Scratch the surface, and you'll find it's not just about the free drinks. It's a place caught up in loneliness, creeping madness, and families falling apart.

So, if the idea of sipping on a drink in a gold-plated room while the world outside gets colder doesn’t quite appeal, maybe stick with the chocolate ice cream. Just maybe find it somewhere a little less chilly and a lot less haunted.
